Fun with Flags – Part 3: flag mania

Step 8 – Boss flags challenge level

Now we can draw flags.

You might want to try some of these challenges, or you might want to make up your own flag. Or maybe draw something else – maybe a house, a science experiment (a beaker? being heated up?) or a plan of your house.

Here's a full set of Python turtle colours (opens in a new tab).

If you want the technical details for any flag, try the Wikipedia article as a starting point – search for "Flag of ..." and you should find some details at least.

Flag of BotswanaChallenge 3.5 – Botswana

An easy one to get started.

You could use a wider white bar across and then add the black bar on top.

I imagine that penup and pendown will be helpful here.

Botswana is in southern Africa and is a major source of diamonds.

Flag of NorwayChallenge 3.6 – Norway

Not too bad.

Like Denmark but with an extra, slightly wider cross under the white one.

The order you draw crosses in will be the key here. Don't forget, the left sections are squares.

Norway is in northern Europe. The flag features a Nordic cross. The same basic design features on all the flags from that part of the word – Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands all use it.

Flag of JamaicaChallenge 3.7 – Jamaica

This is tricky.

I'd start with a gold flag and then add four triangles on top of it.

The hard bit will be getting the angles of the triangles right – the black ones look like equilateral triangles to me, but the green ones are isosceles.

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sea. It was colonised by the British and was a major centre of the sugar trade, with plantations being run by slave labour. Many major British companies have their beginnings in the slave trade in places like Jamaica.

Flag of GuyanaChallenge 3.8 – Guyana

Trickier again.

Lots of overlapping triangles here.

It would probably be best if you started with the green background and then drew four triangles: white; gold; black and red.

But this is a tough one.

Guyana is another country in the Caribbean Sea, although this time most of it is part of South America. Once again it was colonised by Britain and used for slave plantations.

Flag of CubaChallenge 3.9 – Cuba

The basics of this is like Sudan from Part Two – Step 7.

The problem is adding the star on.

There might be an easy way to do this, but I think I'd try to use lots of triangles here. You might want to try making a star first to see if it's even possible.

Cuba is yet another country in the Caribbean Sea which was used for the slave trade – this time it was part of the Spanish empire.

Flag of NepalChallenge 3.A – Nepal

Impossible.

If you can even get the basic shape right I'd be super impressed and would probably give you every award that's available.

As for the symbols in the middle of the flag? Almost certainly impossible.

If you were going to make this, I'd make it quite big. Those symbols will be easier with a big flag base.

But even getting the shape right is properly hard. Two overlapping triangles is probably the best approach for what it's worth.

Nepal is a mountainous country in the Himalayas in Asia, between India and China. Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is usually climbed from Nepal (it's on the border with China).

Now, what else can you draw?
