Step 2 – Turtle challenge 3.1 & 3.2
Turtle challenge time. Cowabunga.
Challenge 3.1 – the flag of Palau
Palau has a very similar flag to Bangladesh.
BUT there are some minor differences:
- the size needs to be 320 steps wide and 200 steps tall. This is a lot bigger than the flag of Bangladesh because the proportions are a little different. Making ti bigger will make the maths easier...
- the circle needs to have a radius of 3/10ths of the height of the flag
- the centre of the circle needs to be half way up the flag and 7/20ths of the way across – so a bit to the left compared to the Bangladesh flag
Here's a full set of Python turtle colours (opens in a new tab).
Palau is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, quite near the Philippines. It only became a country in 1981. It's made up of more than 300 islands but is one of the island nations most at risk from rising sea levels caused by global climate change. The blue of the flag symbolises the ocean that surrounds the country.
Challenge 3.2 – the flag of Laos
The flag of Laos combines stripes and a circle.
Here's the specification for this flag:
- I suggest you use a flag 300 steps wide and 200 steps high here
- the blue stripe is twice the width of each of the red stripes
- the radius of the white circle is 2/5ths the height of the blue stripe
- the circle is right in the centre of the flag
I suggest that you start by drawing a red rectangle the size of the whole flag. Then draw the blue stripe on top of that.
Laos is a landlocked country in south-east Asia. It borders Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and was a French colony until it gained independence in 1953.
This one's quite tricky! It took me five attempts to get it right, so it's only fair that I give you a solution.
Getting the radius of the circle the right size was my main problem here.
